In this music video Mariah Carey shows clearly that she is singing about a past relationship, I can see this through the romantic conventions. The conventions are more clear than others, a clear convention is in the lyrics such as "you treated me kind' and "you took so long" which is clearly talking about someone she had feelings for. She is also alone through out the song connoting that she is alone and the fact that she is all dressed in black and the video itself is reasonably dark shows that this isn't a joyful love she's having but heart breaking love. More hidden conventions that connote her loneliness and her feelings for her past lover are shown in the denotations of the empty swing swinging by itself and how the time-lapse of the clouds in the window represents how slow time goes by without him.
I think that when Mariah is shown at the bottom of the stairs at the start of the video as the camera follows the stairs to the bottom connotes that she is low, at rock bottom maybe.
